August 5 th will be a history making date in the life of the 41-year-old PMC. For my
special group of friends, relatives and customers who have lived 25 of those 41
with me, I thank you. This year’s events should raise over 70 million dollars (72
million last year), and bring our grand total to over 1 Billion dollars.
100% of the money raised by the PMC riders is donated to the Dana Farber
Cancer Hospital/Jimmy Fund. Hospital wings are constructed, world wide research clinics are supported, cancer patients are given a real chance of survival daily.
Everyone reading this knows of someone affected by cancer and, it is my opinion
that on the flip side, you may also know someone who is better off today for the
research done at Dana Farber. I have no doubt that what doctors are now doing
to cure colon cancer and detect ovarian cancer might have saved the lives of my
own parents, who succumbed to those cancers years ago.
Training for this (my 25 th !) ride, with 2 healthy hips and some additional free
time, has been less challenging than it once was. Today, I am almost ready for
that ride even with the big weekend still 2 months away. Not lost on me while I
train, and when I eventually ride the PMC, is the long list of young and old cancer
survivors I meet. The PMC route is filled with cheering survivors, pictures of young
patients, and families thanking us and screaming encouragement at the top of
their lungs.
I cherish the perspective that the first weekend of August brings to my world.
Thankful for my wonderful girlfriend, for feeling healthier than I have ever been,
and for the ability to ride my bike and, in doing so, to make the lives of those less
fortunate better.
Find me at www.pmc.org rider Sg0021 and donate once again please, or search
for me by name Steve Goldberg in Nyack, and or support me through my team,
Team More Cowbell, who last year surpassed the $1 Million mark.
